Sallies locks out union members at its Witkop mine
Sallies announced that members of the National Union of Mineworkers at its
Witkop mine on Friday, 6 April embarked upon an illegal stay away.
Sallies chief executive Izak Marais says the union members failed to report for
their shift at midnight on Thursday evening, saying they would not work Friday,
6 April, a national public holiday.
As a consequence management took the decision to lock-out those employees which
participated in the illegal stay away until they agree to abide by the
conditions of the wage agreement negotiated with the union.
"We have a written agreement with the union stating that all employees will work
on public holidays. The decision by the union members not to report to work on
Friday is contrary to that agreement and is as such an illegal stay away."
Marais says Sallies is in discussion with union leaders to resolve the matter.
The mine has put in place contingency plans to minimise any production
disruptions.
