Drilling Commences in BK19-BK26 kimberlite field, Orapa, Botswana
Tawana, the ASX and JSE quoted diamond mining and exploration company, announced
in May 2007 that it had been granted a new prospecting licence over an area of
approximately 57 square kilometres, covering 8 kimberlites in the Orapa
kimberlite field in Botswana. (See Fig. 1)
Drilling in the Prospecting Licence commenced on 24 September with the aim to
establish the size of the known kimberlites and to target a number of new
geophysical anomalies. Geophysical surveys conducted by Tawana have provided
data which indicate that some of the known kimberlites may be larger than
reported by previous explorers and that as yet undiscovered kimberlites may
exist in the area. (See Fig. 2)
The probable development by De Beers and AIM listed African Diamonds Plc (AFD-L)
of a new diamond mine in the Orapa area on the AK6 kimberlite, (located 25km to
the south of the Tawana licence), which was originally discovered and evaluated
in the 1970`s and considered at that time to be a small, low-grade kimberlite,
provides an indication of the potential that still remains in Botswana. It is
also noteworthy that Firestone Diamond Plc (FDI-L) recently reported that the
estimated size of the BK11 kimberlite, located 20km south of the Tawana licence,
had increased from 6.5 to 8.0 hectares.
The Orapa kimberlite field is located in north eastern Botswana, and includes
the Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa diamonds mines, which produce in excess of 13
million carats of diamonds per year. The Orapa kimberlite field is one of the
largest diamondiferous kimberlite fields in the world, containing 79 known
kimberlites, of which the majority has been proven to be diamondiferous. Orapa
is one of the largest producing kimberlites in the world and is 113 hectares in
surface area.
The Orapa mine is located 20 km to the west; Letlhakane is 30km to the south and
Damtshaa is 6km to the south of the Tawana licence.
Work Program
Tawana has commenced a program of evaluation of the kimberlites which entails
detailed geophysics, trenching and drilling to establish the size of the
kimberlites, followed by bulk sampling to determine the grade and diamond
quality of the kimberlites. Initial indications are that the diamondiferous BK24
is in excess of 3 hectares in surface area and at least one other kimberlite has
a surface area of 2 hectares.
