TRADING STATEMENT FOR THE NINE MONTHS ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2007
In terms of the Listings Requirements of the JSE Limited, companies are
required to publish a trading statement as soon as they become aware that the
financial results for the period to be reported upon next will differ by at
least 20% from the financial results for the previous corresponding period.
The Board of Directors of Merchant advises that its headline earnings per
share for the nine months ended 30 September 2007 is expected to decrease by
between 10% and 20% on the 11,7 cents per share (restated) for the
corresponding nine month period ended 30 September 2006. Earnings per share is
expected to decrease by between 25% and 40% on the 126,3 cents per share
(restated) for the same period.
Shareholders attention is drawn to the fact that headline earnings per share
is determined in accordance with Circular 8/2007 issued by The South African
Institute of Chartered Accountants and which is effective for financial
periods ending on or after 31 August 2007.
This Trading Statement has not been reviewed or reported on by the company`s
external auditors.
Merchant will release its preliminary results on SENS and mail its audited
financial statements to shareholders for the period ended 30 September 2007 on
or about 21 December 2007.
