FATALITY AT BUFFELSFONTEIN GOLD MINE
A seismic event at Simmer & Jack`s Buffelsfontein Mine in the North West
Province has claimed the life of one worker, injuring four of his colleagues.
At approximately 11:58 on Thursday 24 January, a seismic event with a magnitude
of 1.8 occurred at the mine`s No 2 Shaft, triggering a fall of ground in the
stope where the five men were working.
One of the men is critically injured and the other three are being treated for
minor injuries.
Executive management is on site attending to the incident. They have
subsequently suspended all stoping operations at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in
areas with a history of seismic activity. These stopes will be critically re-
evaluated and a decision regarding the resumption of mining in these areas will
be taken in due course.
