BUFFELSFONTEIN`S TWO SHAFT RE-OPENED
Simmer & Jack Mines, Limited today announced that the Number Two Shaft at its
Buffelsfontein Mine in the North West Province had been re-opened, following a
seismic event that claimed the life of one worker and injured four others on
Thursday 24 January 2008.
As per an operational update issued by Simmers on Monday 28 January, operations
at the mine`s Number Two shaft were temporarily suspended by the Department of
Minerals and Energy (DME), pending a reassessment of the mine`s seismic risk
management system.
"Following the results of an audit process which covered a systems overview and
an action plan to prevent a possible reoccurrence of such an incident, the DME
set aside the order today. As a result we will resume normal stoping operations
at Number Two shaft with immediate effect" said Deon van der Mescht, chief
operating officer for Simmer & Jack.
The DME`s order to suspend mining operations at the Number Two shaft on Friday
25 January 2008, coincided with the Eskom communique stating that the power
utility was unable to guarantee power. The intensive audit and evaluation
focused on all working places with a similar seismic risk profile to the area
where the incident occurred. This work was carried out throughout the weekend,
and into Monday and Tuesday after Eskom gave the go ahead to continue
underground operations to allow making safe and maintenance of workings.
Of the four workers injured during the incident, two were treated for minor
injuries while one was admitted overnight to the Duff Scott Hospital and
discharged the following day. Their critically injured colleague is out of ICU
and is being treated in an orthopaedic ward at a private hospital, where his
condition has been described as stable.
