Dr Fred Roux appointed as Non-Executive Chairman of Sallies Limited
The Board of Sallies Limited is pleased to announce the appointment of Fred
Roux as Non-Executive Chairman with effect from 1 July 2008. Dr Roux is
currently Non-Executive Chairman of Impala Platinum.
This appointment follows an announcement by Tom Dale, CEO of Sallies, earlier
this year, that he would separate the roles of chairman and CEO, in terms of
good corporate governance, by January 2009.
Dale said he was delighted that Fred Roux had accepted this position.
"Fred has a wealth of experience in the mining industry and I am certain he
will bring valuable experience and business acumen to Sallies. It is a great
honour for us to appoint someone of his standing to the board and I look
forward to working with him. In addition, I am glad to separate the roles of
chairman and CEO six months before our deadline."
Dr Roux confirmed that he was excited about the prospects for Sallies, given
the evidence of increasing demand in the fluorspar market and the presence of
a committed management team. In his view it was an exciting prospect for a
mining company to achieve above average growth from a relatively small base.
Dr Roux joined the JCI Finance Division in 1976 with a BSc, MSc and PhD in
Engineering from Cape Town and an MBA from Cranfield. He gained experience in
copper, nickel, gold and platinum becoming a director, inter alia, of what is
now Amplats, with responsibility for international marketing and corporate
strategy by 1987.
In 1991 he was recruited by Brian Gilbertson to head the Minerals Division of
Genmin, the mining arm of Gencor. He was appointed as an executive director
of Gencor in 1995 and was responsible for the transformation of Alusaf, from a
loss making operation to a world class business, and building a 50% stake in
Richards Bay Minerals, a world class titanium dioxide producer co-owned with
RTZ. Both of these assets were key to the Gencor/Billiton transaction.
On resignation from Gencor in 1997 he became a Non-Executive Director of
Sudelektra, the forerunner of Xstrata, which at that time had a value of about
US$1bn. He was appointed Non-Executive Chairman of Impala Platinum in 2004,
and when he resigned from Xstrata in 2007 due to possible conflicts of
interest, its value was in excess of US$20bn.
