INDICATOR MINERAL CHEMISTRY FROM AND BULK SAMPLING OF SHONE KIMBERLITE PIPE,
CARTER BLOCK NORTHERN CAPE
The Shone kimberlite pipe is situated in KCM`s Carter Block Exploration Project
("Carter Block") between Kimberley and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, South
Africa. The Carter Block prospecting right borders directly on the De Beer`s
Finsch Mine ("Finsch") and hosts three known kimberlite pipes, several
kimberlite dykes which appear physically linked to the Finsch pipe, and two
alluvial exploration targets that may also be genetically derived from the
Finsch kimberlite.
The Shone kimberlite pipe and an ancillary kimberlite dyke are exposed in the
Lime Acres limestone Quarry 5. KCM has undertaken a comprehensive reverse
circulation ("RC") drilling exploration programme on the pipe, which has
delineated the surface expression and depth extension to 100m of the kimberlite.
The pipe is irregularly shaped, approximately 2.16ha in extent and consists of
at least two intrusive phases represented by two, calcretised, tuffisitc,
kimberlite breccias at surface grading with depth into two, olivine rich,
hypabyssal, Group 2 kimberlites. Finsch is, similarly, a multiphase Group 2
kimberlite.
The indicator minerals from core samples of Shone kimberlite have been analysed
and the results are very encouraging in terms of diamond bearing potential.
Subcalcic peridotitic G10 garnets occur in all samples and are present in high
concentrations which are indicative of origins within the diamond stability
field. The sodium (Na), titanium (Ti) signature of the garnets is typically that
expected of a Group 2 kimberlite. The Shone kimberlite spinels are low TiO2,
high Cr2O3 spinels and fall within the range typical of diamondiferous
kimberlites. Significantly, the Shone kimberlite garnet population, both in
terms of the chromium (Cr) and calcium (Ca) contents and the high content of
subcalcic garnets, is similar to that of Finsch.
Thermobarometric calculations suggest that the Shone kimberlite has sampled the
mantle within the diamond stability field and this is confirmed by the micro-
diamond analysis which recovered 16 micro-diamonds.
Furthermore, a comparison of the Shone garnet chemistry with that of garnets
from Premier, Orapa, Mir, Finsch, Koffiefontein, Yagersfontein, Wesselton and
Dutoitspan kimberlites has indicated that the chemistry of the Shone garnets is,
in most cases, superior in terms of diamond potential to these examples.
Based on these positive results, KCM has applied for permission from the
Department of Minerals and Energy to commence bulk sampling of the Shone
kimberlite as soon as possible. The process will commence upon the aforesaid
approval having been obtained. A comprehensive sampling protocol and Sample
Trail Audit has been designed for the process and KCM anticipates generating a
recovered grade estimate shortly, which will be fully compliant with the South
African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and
Mineral Reserves ("SAMREC").
