TRADING STATEMENT
This trading statement is issued in compliance with paragraph 3.4(b) of the
Listings Requirements of the JSE Limited.
On 27 May 2008 a SENS announcement indicated that Mercantile`s earnings and
headline earnings per share for the six months ending 30 June 2008 were expected
to improve by 45% to 65% and 38% to 58%, respectively, compared to the earnings
and headline earnings per share reported for the six months ended 30 June 2007.
The earnings and headline earnings for the six months ended 30 June 2008 are now
expected to improve by 64% to 68% and 59% to 63%, respectively, compared to the
earnings and headline earnings per share reported for the six months ended 30
June 2007. This further improvement since 27 May 2008, is due to higher income
achieved and recoveries made than was anticipated in May and June.
The financial information on which this trading statement is based has not been
reviewed or reported on by the company`s auditors.
The results for the six months ended 30 June 2008 are expected to be published
on 24 July 2008.
