FATAL INCIDENT AT BUFFELSFONTEIN GOLD MINE
Simmer & Jack Mines, Limited (Simmers) regrets to announce that a seismic event
at its Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in the North West Province has claimed the life
of one mineworker and injured another.
The incident took place on Friday 29 August 2008 at the mine`s Number Two shaft,
triggering a fall of ground in the stope where the men were working. The injured
worker is being treated at the Duff Scott hospital.
Mining operations at the Number Two shaft have been suspended pending a review
of seismic safety initiatives at the shaft.
Gordon Miller, chief executive of Simmers, said: "The Company views this
incident in an extremely serious light and will be reviewing the situation with
representatives of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), organized labour
and independent rock engineering specialists. We extend our sincere condolences
to the family and friends of the deceased and assure them of our support during
this difficult time."
