TONGAAT HULETT: Appointment of Independent Non-Executive Directors to the Board
Tongaat Hulett is pleased to announce the appointment to the Board of the
following three new Independent Non-Executive Directors, with effect from 1
October 2008;
Mrs Fatima Jakoet - B Sc, CTA, CA (SA)
Mrs Jakoet has in-depth experience in various facets of large corporate
businesses, from both a strategic and operational perspective, including
industrial relations, transformation and employment equity issues.
She commenced her career in the auditing profession, followed by a period
lecturing in financial accounting at UWC. She worked in the Eskom Group for ten
years in positions ranging from regional and corporate finance to general
manager, telecommunications. After taking on other general management
positions, she left the corporate environment to concentrate on personal
investment opportunities and directorships. Mrs Jakoet is now a non-executive
director of the SA Reserve Bank and its key subsidiaries, Metropolitan Holdings
Ltd and its key subsidiaries, Impala Platinum Ltd, New Clicks Holdings Ltd and
MTN West and Central Africa Region. She also chairs various Audit & Risk
committees on the boards on which she serves.
Dr Vincent Maphai - BA, MA, PhD
Vincent Maphai is currently Chairman of BHP Billiton, Southern
Africa. Previously, he was Corporate Affairs Director at The SAB-Miller
Company, and Chairman of Castle Brewing Company, Namibia.
Prior to joining the private sector in 1998, Dr Maphai had an academic career
spanning over two decades. He taught at the Universities of Transkei,
Witwatersrand, Western Cape, Cape Town and Pretoria and holds degrees from the
Universities of Natal, UNISA and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
He was awarded a degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa by the University
of Pretoria in 2007. He has held various teaching and research fellowships at
institutions abroad, including Oxford, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford.
He has also been involved in various public policy projects and roles including
being Chairman of the Presidential Review Commission, The South African
Broadcasting Corporation and the Council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Mrs Nonhlanhla Mjoli-Mncube - BA, MSc
Mrs Mjoli-Mncube is currently the economic advisor to the Deputy President of
SA, focusing on the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa
(ASGISA) and Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA).
She has worked as a town and regional planner in South Africa, a survey research
supervisor at Washington State University, an executive director at a subsidiary
of Murray and Roberts, Chairman of the National Urban Reconstruction and Housing
Agency (NURCHA), Chairman of the Rural Housing Loan Fund, Women for Housing and
the Open Society Institute in South Africa. She has run her own company Mjoli
Development Company and Eziko Investments. Mrs Mjoli-Mncube has been recognized
for her work in the SMME sector, empowerment of women and housing finance.
