BUFFELSFONTEIN GOLD MINE CONCLUDES SECTION 189(A) CONSULTATION PROCESS
Simmer & Jack Mines, Limited confirmed today that consultations in terms of
Section 189A of the Labour Relations Act regarding the future of 500 jobs at its
wholly-owned subsidiary, Buffelsfontein Gold Mines Limited, had been concluded.
In total, the final number of job cuts was limited to 70 positions across all
levels at the mine, from semi-skilled workers to head of department level. Eight
of these positions are currently vacant through natural attrition. Of the 62
people affected, five are full-time mine employees while 57 are employed by
external contractors.
The selection criteria and the terms of the retrenchment packages and will be
finalized over the next few days.
The agreement was concluded on 11 February 2009, after it was referred to the
Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for facilitation
in December 2008.
Simmers chief executive Gordon Miller said that the CCMA had played a key role
in bringing about agreement between the parties and minimizing potential job
losses.
"The agreement makes provision for a number of measures to ensure that the mine
achieves its production and cost targets without the need to retrench 500
workers which is excellent news in the current economic climate," said Miller.
The agreement makes provision for working one additional compulsory Saturday
production shift for all production employees for every month of 2009 from 14
February 2009 to 19 December 2009. The labour unions also agreed to work
additional days to enable workers to take a break over Easter and Christmas
without it affecting the mine`s production targets.
A task team comprising labour and management has been established with the aim
of improving productivity and rationalizing costs at the mine.
