REVIEWED RESULTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2009
HIGHLIGHTS:
- REVENUE INCREASED BY 8.0%
- HEADLINE EARNINGS PER SHARE DECREASED BY 33%
- DIVIDEND MAINTAINED AT 35 CENTS PER SHARE
- STRONG BALANCE SHEET
COMMENTARY
Revenue grew by a modest 8,0% to R502,8 million in a difficult trading
environment. This improvement was not, however, carried through to bottom-line
profit.
As foreseen in the interim report the second half-year to June 2009 presented a
challenge as the downturn in consumer demand took greater effect. This resulted
in a second half performance which moderated the results for the full year.
Earnings benefited last year from a low effective rate of tax of 15,2% which is
not applicable this year.
Headline earnings per share declined by 33,4% to 124,1 cents per share. Earnings
per share have declined by 33,9% to 125,8 cents per share.
Retail
Queenspark achieved an increase in turnover of 12,2% to R466,2 million. The
pleasing performance of the first half of the year was not repeated during the
second half where the turnover improvement moderated to 6,2% on the previous
year, reflecting a deteriorating retail climate.
Performance for the year was impaired by a provision of R5,6 million, being an
unrealised foreign exchange loss resulting from a revaluation of forward
exchange contracts on hand at 30 June 2009.
High increases in the cost of both locally produced and imported clothing
brought gross margins under pressure.
Performance was further tempered by increased occupancy costs, resulting from
the addition of new stores, high rental escalations, increases in municipal
rates and the increased cost of electricity.
All of the above factors contributed to a decrease of 12,5% in operating
profit. As a result the operating profit return on turnover was 6,9% compared
to 8,8% achieved last year.
Manufacturing
Clothing manufacturing activities at the Atlantis plant continued to encounter
absenteeism problems and low levels of productivity. In addition a major
customer cut back on orders as a consequence of the downturn in consumer
demand. Following a profitable period in 2008 this segment incurred a loss of
R2,1 million in 2009. It is likely that a further loss will be incurred in the
2010 financial year.
Prospects
Four new stores were opened during the year. A further four stores will open
before December 2009.
Although turnover for the first two months of the new financial year is
marginally improved on last year it is too early to gauge how the summer season
will develop.
Depressed retail conditions are expected to continue, however, for at least the
remainder of 2009 calendar year, and the achievement of sales targets will
remain challenging.
Earnings benefited materially from the Duty Credit Certificate Scheme operated
by the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa. The long
term sustainability of these benefits is uncertain.
Dividend
The board is recommending to shareholders that the dividend on the ordinary and
`N` ordinary shares be maintained at 35 cents per share. This will result in a
dividend cover of 3,5 times.
Shareholders will be asked to consider, and if deemed fit, approve the
directors` dividend recommendation at the annual general meeting of the company
to be held on 11 November 2009.
An announcement detailing the terms of the dividend declaration will be made
immediately following the annual general meeting.
