MEDIA RELEASE - SEKUNJALO INVESTMENTS LIMITED RATED AS SOUTH AFRICA`S TOP
EMPOWERED COMPANY FOR 2010
Sekunjalo Investments Limited, a black controlled investment holding company
has been named the country`s most empowered company. This prestigious award
was released today by the Financial Mail/Empowerdex Top Companies Awards for
2010.
In recent years, the Financial Mail/Empowerdex Awards have authoritatively
ranked Sekunjalo in 2006 as the Top Empowerment Company and in 2004 and 2005
as one of the Top Empowerment Companies (2nd and 7th respectively) out of the
Top 200 companies listed on the JSE. Sekunjalo has also won the award in its
sector in 2004, 2005, 2006 and now 2010.
Whilst the award considers empowerment factors (such as black ownership, black
management, employment equity) when deciding its scores for companies,
additional factors such as employment equity, skills development,
preferentially procurement, enterprise development and social economic
development are also taken into account.
Sekunjalo won the overall award as well as being ranked first in the Financial
Sector as well as number one on black ownership. The Group also scored highly
in Enterprise Development, Employment Equity and Socio Economic Development.
Executive Chairman, Dr Iqbal Surve was proud that Sekunjalo has again been
recognised as South Africa`s most empowered company. He said that this
recognition validates Sekunjalo`s empowerment model and consolidates its
position as the pre-eminent black partner of choice with a strong commitment
to South Africa and its people. Dr Surve also commented that he was in fact
more pleased with the high ranking that Sekunjalo received for the areas of
enterprise development and socio economic development which recognize the
company`s efforts in working towards finding solutions to poverty and
unemployment in South Africa. "Sekunjalo`s philosophy of the seven P`s of
being purpose driven, profitable, building meaningful partnerships, a people`s
centered organisation, pro-poor in its approach and pro-development as well as
putting the planet (through its sustainable initiatives) at the core of its
business approach is critical to its role as a responsible corporate citizen.
Dr Surve said today that empowerment and socio economic development go hand in
hand and are the crucial building blocks of a new and more inclusive society.
Empowerment must be about embracing the skills of all South African`s, black
and white through a value system that achieves meaningful socio economic
transformation.
Dr Surve has said that this award is an acknowledgement of the visionary role
and guidance of the Board of Sekunjalo and of the execution of the empowerment
ethos by the CEO Mr Khalid Abdulla and his management team. He thanks "all
