SHAFTS BEGIN RE-OPENING AT BUFFELSFONTEIN GOLD MINE
Following the SENS announcement dated 6 May 2010, in which it was reported that
the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) had suspended work on all shafts at
Buffelsfontein Gold Mine pending the outcome of a safety audit, Simmers is
pleased to report that the mine`s Number 2 and Number 10 shafts have been re-
opened. The two shafts account for approximately 30% of the mine`s underground
production.
Management is engaging with the DMR with a view to re-opening the remaining four
operating shafts by the end of the week.
Production from surface sources, which accounts for just over 25% of the mine`s
total gold output, was unaffected by the stoppage and surface throughput has
been increased in order to fully utilize the available plant capacity during
this period.
To date, the temporary stoppage of its underground operations has cost
Buffelsfontein Gold Mine approximately 90kg (2 894 ounces) in lost gold
production.
