CHANGES TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
In compliance with section 3.59 of the Listings Requirements of the JSE Limited,
the board is pleased to announce the appointment of the following non-executive
directors with immediate effect:
Mr George Henry Johannes (Independent non-executive chairman)
Mr Sibusiso Sydney Gamede (Independent non-executive)
The new appointees to the Board are in line with the major shareholder`s policy
of nominating independent directors to its investee companies.
Mr Hendrik Petrus Jakobus Pretorius has resigned from the board with effect from
10 December 2010.
Mr Ivor Charles Stratford will resign from the board with effect from 31
December 2010 after having facilitated a handover to the new chairman. Further
board appointments will be made in the New Year.
Brief profiles of the new appointees are outlined below.
Ambassador George Henry Johannes
Ambassador Johannes studied at University College Cork in Ireland and graduated
with a First Class BA Honours Degree in Philosophy and History. On locating to
London, he enrolled with the University of Reading, Berkshire and completed a
Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance as well as a Master of Education
Degree.
He started working as a Specialist Careers Adviser at Reading College of
Technology and later enrolled with the University of Leicester for a Doctor of
Philosophy degree whilst teaching Masters Students in Political Economy and
Politics at the University of London, Birbeck College.
Ambassador Johannes worked as a full-time activist of the African National
Congress (ANC) as researcher and radio journalist with the ANC`s Radio Freedom
in Angola and Zambia. He was appointed the ANC`s Administrative Secretary of
the Department of Information and Publicity in Zambia and was later appointed
Administrative Secretary of the ANC`s Official Publication, "Sechaba" at the
ANC`s Head Office in London.
After his election to the ANC`s National Youth Executive Committee in Tanzania,
he was elected the Youth Section`s Secretary and later the Chairperson of the UK
Branch. He was appointed the ANC`s Representative to the World Federation of
Democratic Youth (WFDY) in Budapest, Hungary. On returning to South Africa in
1994, he assisted with the ANC`s election campaign and in 1995 was appointed
Director of International Relations with the newly established Department of
Labour.
In 1997 he transferred to the Department of Foreign Affairs as a Director and
was appointed Deputy High Commissioner at the South African High Commission in
London. On returning to South Africa in 2005, he was appointed Director for UK,
Ireland and Benelux Countries with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
In 2007 he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission in Berlin, Germany. In April
2009 he took up his appointment as South Africa`s Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary to the Swiss Confederation, the Principality of Liechtenstein
and the Holy See - The Vatican.
Mr Sibusiso Sydney Gamede
Mr Gamede is currently the special advisor to the Minister of the Department of
Agriculture and Land Affairs which position he has held since 2006. He has a LLB
qualification from Warwick University in the UK, as well as having obtained
various diplomas relating to law and legal practise from the UK and USA. Mr
Gamede has been admitted as an attorney and conveyancer in the High Courts in
both South Africa and Lesotho.
Mr Gamede spent many years overseas, having held positions as Head of the South
African Government Delegation Basel Convention and Chairperson of the Africa
Legal Group in Geneva, representative of Africa in the Drafting of the
Compliance Regime under the Basel Convention and Chair of the Strategic Planning
Basel Convention, Head of South African Delegation and Advisor to Minister Moosa
UNFCCC in Bonn, Advisor To Minister Moosa and Minister Roschild UNFCCC and
Chairperson of the LDC Group in Morocco and Head of South African Government
Delegation POPS.
Mr Gamede was Chief Executive Officer of Black Lawyers Association-Legal
Education Centre from 1997 - 2001, Chief Director of the Department of
Environmental Affairs and Tourism to 2002, a consultant for the Basel Convention
in Pretoria from 2002 - 2004, Chief Executive Officer of Sibusiso Legal
Consultants from 2003 to 2005 and Senior Partner at Smit Jones and Pratt
Attorneys before being appointed to his current position at the Department of
Agriculture and Land Affairs.
