Boost for South Africa`s health and safety practitioners
Health and safety practitioners in South Africa now have the opportunity of
joining the largest health and safety membership organisation in the world,
through a partnership between NOSA (Pty) Ltd (NOSA) and the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
MICROmega`s subsidiary company NOSA finalised an affiliation agreement with the
UK-based IOSH whereby selected students who pass NOSA`s SAMTRAC Training Course
have the opportunity of joining IOSH as a Technician at no charge.
According to Hazel Harvey, Executive Director of Membership of IOSH, "NOSA is
the premier training organisation for health and safety in South Africa. It has
a long and illustrious history of producing excellent training programmes and we
are thrilled that they recognise the value of IOSH membership and the
opportunity to have accreditation from IOSH".
IOSH members obtain a number of benefits such as free health and safety (H&S)
advice, subscription to a monthly magazine, use of an online CPD system,
downloadable best practice guides and the chance to shape the development of the
global health and safety profession.
Gary Streek, NOSA Director, stated "The partnership between the entities is in
line with IOSH`s strategy to grow its membership base in South Africa given
NOSA`s dominant position in the local market and allows NOSA to expand its
training courses into the international market with IOSH`s recognition." "NOSA
was happy to facilitate IOSH membership in South Africa and we are pleased to be
affiliated with IOSH as we share the same outlook and objectives for the H&S
industry," says Streek.
IOSH was founded in 1945 and is the only Royal Chartered body for health and
safety professionals in the world, and was the first European safety body to be
awarded NGO status by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). IOSH has more
than 40,000 individual members in 85 countries and has experienced a 35% growth
in members over the past 5 years, which is a reflection of the growth in the
global H&S industry.
Greg Morris, MICROmega Chief Executive Officer, had this to say: "We are excited
about the affiliation and are thrilled that NOSA and IOSH have agreed to work
together to aid the development of excellence in H&S education and
qualifications in South Africa". The two organisations are also meeting with
SAQA and seven South African universities looking at developing the status of
H&S as a profession through higher education."
