PRELIMINARY RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 NOVEMBER 2003
A network of specialised branches and independent distributors serves the
replacement part markets in southern Africa"s primary and secondary industries
and domestic and commercial security service providers.
* Headline EPS up 16% to R3,65 - R105 million
* Five year compound growth in HEPS - 18%
* Dividends increased 16% to R1,22 per share
* Stronger balance sheet
RESULTS
Hudaco"s business is predominately an importer and distributor of industrial
products and its main customer base is South Africa"s manufacturing, mining,
automotive and security industries.
The substantial strengthening of the Rand in 2003 impacted negatively on
mining customers and those manufacturing customers who are dependant on
exports or who are competing with imports. On the other hand, demand from
manufacturing and other customers serving the South African market was robust
as the impact of interest rate reductions spurred consumer spending. Against
this background the prices of our mainly imported product range have been
falling in response to the stronger Rand but since less than 40% of Hudaco"s
imports are Dollar based, decreases have not mirrored the extreme weakening of
that currency. Throughout this period Hudaco has maintained its policy of
covering forward all foreign currency liabilities. This has been expensive for
the group especially as the Rand strengthened, but it provided certainty on
the cost of goods sold and amounts owing to suppliers.
In 2003 Hudaco"s sales mix improved slightly with a higher proportion of value
added versus commodity sales which is reflected in the higher margin this
year. The Bearings and Power Transmission division posted a small improvement
in sales and operating profit resulting mainly from the acquisition of
Varispeed, a distributor of variable speed drives. The Powered Products
division produced particularly pleasing results whilst our Security Products
division, in particular its United Kingdom subsidiary in its first full year
of operation, posted a very satisfactory improvement on last year.
Sales of R1,48 billion for the year are the same as 2002 which broadly
reflects the weak demand and falling prices environment. The operating profit
margin rose from 9,8% to 11% resulting in a 15% increase in operating profit
to R163 million. Net financing costs reduced from R7,5 million last year to
R0,7 million due to lower interest rates and a stable working capital
requirement. Headline earnings increased 18% from R89 million in 2002 to R105
million.
Headline earnings per share rose 16% to 365 cents. The final dividend of 90
cents brings total dividends this year to 122 cents per share, an increase of
16%.
BALANCE SHEET AND CASH FLOW
The balance sheet is healthy. Working capital is at 2002 levels and each
element thereof, inventories, accounts receivable and accounts payable are in
line with current activity. Net cash on hand (cash balances less interest
bearing debt) at year-end is R104 million, up R50 million on 2002. Cash flow
per share at 358 cents is essentially the same as earnings per share and the
net cash on hand position gives the group considerable internal resources for
expansion. Net asset value per share is R15,79.
PROSPECTS
The South African mining and manufacturing exporting industries are expected
to continue to be under some pressure as the improving global demand for South
African exports is offset by lower Rand selling prices. Conversely,
manufacturers and other Hudaco customers serving South African markets are
expected to continue to do well in 2004 as lower inflation and interest rates
stimulate consumer spending in the local economy.
With exchange rates playing such an important role in Hudaco"s fortunes, it is
difficult to form a view on the likely financial results in 2004. Hudaco"s
businesses are soundly placed to benefit from any improvement in trading
conditions and a good financial performance is expected in 2004.
DIVIDEND
Notice is hereby given that final dividend No 33 of 90 cents per share has
been declared in respect of the year ended 30 November 2003.
The last day to trade in order to participate in the dividend ("cum" the
dividend), will be Friday 12 March 2004. The share will commence trading "ex"
the dividend from the commencement of business on Monday, 15 March 2004 and
the record date will be Friday 19 March 2004. The dividend will be paid on
Tuesday 23 March 2004. Share certificates may not be dematerialised or
rematerialised between Monday 15 March 2004 and Friday 19 March 2004, both

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
These results were prepared applying accounting policies which conform with
South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice and are
consistent with those applied in the most recent annual financial statements,
except for changes resulting from the mandatory application of the following
new accounting statement:
AC 133, "Financial Instruments: Recognition and measurement" which requires
financial instruments to be recorded at fair value. The resultant marked-to-
market gain or loss is taken to income except for gains or losses on
designated cash flow hedging instruments which are deferred in equity. The
application of this statement resulted in a write-off against opening retained
income of R4,8 million in respect of the cost of forward cover relating to
inventory which was deferred at 30 November 2002. The application of AC 133
has had no material effect on the earnings for the year.
