Cape Town - Million Air, the listed outsourcing airline, has taken over joint management of Sun Air, which flies business class only between Johannesburg and Cape Town three times a day.
And Sun Air has joined other airlines in slashing prices. Acting managing director Rowald Kresfelder said it was offering 15 000 one-way tickets at R799 (including taxes) compared with its normal R1 400 fare. He said the tickets were valid for six months but this period could be extended.
Million Air leases two DC9 aircraft, with pilots and cabin crew, to Sun Air, which bought the airline from it last year.
Johan Botha, the managing director of Million Air, said Sun Air had passenger loads of between 60 percent and 65 percent for most of the year and needed only 50 percent to break even.
"But most passengers are business people and this market always has a seasonal drop from December 15 to January 15.
"This year passenger loads fell to 35 percent during the holiday period. We have now decided to broaden our market by attracting leisure travellers as well."
Botha said Sun Air had agreed to lease two DC9s to 1Time later this year when the new no-frills airline plans to start its second route.
