TRADING UPDATE AND CAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENT
Shoprite shareholders are advised that earnings attributable to shareholders
excluding unrealised foreign exchange translation differences for the six months
ended 31 December 2003 will be materially higher than that of the comparative
period for 2002 and earnings attributable to shareholders including unrealised
foreign exchange translation differences will be substantially higher than that
of the comparative period for 2002.
This trading update is made in accordance with the JSE Securities Exchange South
Africa Listings Requirements and the terms "material" and "substantial" are used
as defined therein.
Further details will be provided when Shoprite"s results for the six months
ended 31 December 2003 are published on 17 February 2004.
As the above statements have not been reviewed and reported on by Shoprite"s
auditors, shareholders are advised to continue exercising caution when dealing
in Shoprite"s shares until the publication of the results.
