HARMONY OPERATIONS AFFECTED BY NUM STRIKE ACTION
Johannesburg, 12 February 2004
The company reported today that approximately 4 500 employees went on
strike at its Nyala, Welkom and Orkney Shafts. These shafts contribute
approximately 5% to Harmony’s production base of some 4 million ounces
per annum.
Harmony and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have been engaged
in wage negotiations and other terms and conditions of employment for the
former Armgold shafts from September 2003. These shafts are not included
in the bi-annual wage agreements which were concluded in July 2003.
The negotiation process ended in deadlock with a 7% offer by management in
reply to demands of 25% from the union. Following a range of negotiations
the company increased its offer to 9% in reply to the current union demand of
10%. Following the rejection of the increased offer, the employees
proceeded on a legal strike with the nightshift last night.
The company reported that it was willing to continue in negotiations with the
union on resolving the dispute.
