COMMENTS
EARNINGS
The group is pleased to have maintained revenue, in Rand terms, at the same
level as the corresponding period, in spite of the current deflationary
environment.
The loss on foreign exchange is due largely to the revaluation of forward
exchange contracts at 31 December 2003.
The revision of the estimated useful lives of fixtures and fittings in our
retail division significantly increased the depreciation charge for the period
under review, while tight management of working capital led to a decrease in the
net finance charge for the period.
Headline earnings per share increased by 8% from 19,9 cents to 21,5 cents.
Earnings per share increased by 3% from 19,9 cents to 20,5 cents.
The balance sheet remains strong, with tangible net asset value increasing to
309 cents per share.
REVIEW OF OPERATIONS
In the retail division, which showed exceptional growth during this period last
year, trading conditions were particularly difficult during the period under
review. The strong Rand impacted negatively on both the number of inbound
tourists and their discretionary spend. This had a significant impact on our
retail stores, many of which have been affected by the drop in tourism.
The distribution division continued to trade above budget and solidified its
position as market leader in the distribution of leather goods, handbags,
luggage, accessories, eyewear, apparel and related products.
PROSPECTS
There has been no material change to trading conditions since 31 December 2003.
The company continues to manage the effects of the current deflationary
environment.
The full-year earnings to 30 June 2003 included revenue from the Cricket World
Cup, which will not be the case in the current financial year.
COMMITMENTS
The group has operating lease commitments of R25,2 million in the next 12
months, and R37,4 million thereafter.
ACCOUNTING P0LICIES
The accounting policies and methods of computation used in the preparation of
these interim results are the same as those used in the annual financial
statements to 30 June 2003, and comply with South African Statements of
Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.
