Comment on Results
The segmented analysis detailed above is self-explanatory.
Shareholders are referred to the Chairman"s Report contained in the 2003
financial statements under the heading Prospects for the 2004 Financial Year,
wherein Dr Aaron Searll stated that the period currently under review was going
to be difficult and should be viewed with caution. He also stated that the
appreciation of the Rand was encouraging huge imports of apparel, yarn and
textiles, and that profit margins on exports would be under pressure.
These earlier predictions of tough market conditions have unfortunately
materialised, resulting in group revenue decreasing by 7,8% to R2016,1 million
(2002: R2187,4 million).
Pre-tax profit prior to the amortisation of negative goodwill reduced to
R23,7 million (2002: R45,3 million), a decrease of 47,6%. After the amortisation
of negative goodwill, pre-tax income reduced to R41,3 million (2002: R62,9
million), a decrease of 34,3%.
Income after taxation reduced to R37,9 million (2002: R53,5 million), a decrease
of 29,3%.
Headline earnings per share amounted to 15,2 cents, a reduction of 54,8% from
last year"s level of 33,6 cents.
The number of shares in issue at 31 December 2003 has increased to 133,9
million, consisting of 27,1 million ordinary shares of 25 cents each and 106,8
million N ordinary shares of 0,25 cents each.
Tangible net asset value is 838 cents per share based on 133,9 million shares
(2002: 978 cents, based on 107,1 million shares).
Exports have, because of the above, reduced to R220 million (2002: R254 million)
for the period under review. Of this amount, apparel exports amount to R190
million (2002: R196 million), a reduction of 3,1%. This represents 20,0% of
apparel turnover compared with 21% last year. Textile exports reduced to
R30 million (2002: R58 million), a decrease of 48%.
The strength of the Rand over the reporting period has been a major contributing
factor towards the decline in profitability. It has impacted negatively on
exports, for obvious reasons, and has caused substantial import substitution,
resulting in low margins being experienced for the company"s products. This is
especially apparent in the Frame Textile Group, where revenues amounted to R769
million, which is 21% lower than last year.
This resulted in Frame"s operating income amounting to R29,4 million, a
reduction of 63%. Apparel revenues reflected a marginal increase albeit at very
tight margins.
Divisions that source product offshore benefited from the firmer Rand. This
resulted in increased profit contributions from Seartec/ Sharp Electronics and
Prima Toys.
Commentary
Whilst most retailers have signed up to the Proudly South African concept, and
have agreed to source at least 75% from South African manufacturers, margins are
under pressure. The Department of Trade & Industry needs to urgently address the
implementation of the Country of Origin labelling programme and also needs to
impose higher customs duties to coincide with its original agreement with the
World Trade Organisation. We are currently far ahead of the requirements of that
body. This would enable us to protect local industry and its labour force.
Outlook to June 2004
Whilst interest rates have reduced to more acceptable levels and would appear to
be maintaining these levels for the remainder of the 2004 calendar year, the
volatility of the value of the Rand against the currencies of our main trading
partners, specifically the United States dollar, is severely impacting on
profitability. Until such time as the Rand reduces its level of volatility, and
once again gradually depreciates against the usual basket of currencies, it will
inhibit Seardel from achieving acceptable returns.
