COMMENTS
The operating profit of the group before taxation amounted to R2,217,000 (2002:
R2,639,649) after interest paid of R3,113,000 (2002: R3,823,864). Headline
earnings per ordinary share were 5,3 cents compared to 6,6 cents for the
previous year. During the year, certain lease agreements were renewed at rentals
below those being paid before expiry due to changes in market conditions. A
repeat of these conditions is not anticipated in 2004 and higher revenues have
been budgeted. The continued strength of the Rand during 2003, particularly
against the US dollar, has impacted on the earnings of our Confirming Division
with its clients paying less for imports than before.
The group"s property portfolio has been valued by CB Richard Ellis on an "open
market" basis at 31 December 2003 at R60,715,000 (2002: R60,810,000). Investment
property yields in Durban"s CBD area are still high but it is pleasing to note
the Municipality has embarked on a policy of upgrading that will benefit all
concerned.
The value of the portfolio of overseas listed shares at year end was R15,370,000
(2002: R15,212,918) whilst in sterling currency amounted to GBP1,299,229
(GBP1,104,972). Again, the Rand strength has created negative adjustments in
respect of the share portfolio and cash balances, in the Confirming Division,
held offshore.
The board of directors has deemed it appropriate to maintain a dividend policy
in accordance with the group"s budgeted after-tax operating results for 2004,
namely 10,4 cents per share, barring unforeseen circumstances.
The provisional financial statements of the group have been prepared in
accordance with the South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting
Practice, on a basis consistent with prior years.
INDEPENDENT AUDITORS" REVIEW
The financial information set out in the provisional results has been reviewed,
but not audited, by our auditors, David Strachan & Tayler. Their unqualified
review report is available for inspection at the registered office.
