TRADING STATEMENT AND CAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENT
In terms of the Listings Requirements of the JSE Securities Exchange South
Africa (`the JSE`) listed companies are required to publish a trading statement
as soon as they become aware that the financial results for the period to be
reported upon next, will be materially different from the financial results for
the previous corresponding period.
Shareholders are advised that should the current underwriting experience, as
well as general market investment conditions continue, the results for the half
year ending 30 June 2004 will be substantially (`substantially` meaning equal to
or greater than a 30% increase or decrease as defined in the JSE Listings
Requirements) higher than those of the corresponding period of last year.
As the forecast financial information is not reviewed or reported on by the
company`s auditors, shareholders are advised to exercise caution when dealing in
Santam`s shares until the release of the interim results for the six months
ended 30 June 2004 which are expected to be published on or about 25 August
2004.
Shareholders are reminded of the short-term insurance industry`s inherent
volatility due to the combination of underwriting and investment activities.
