Sabvest is an investment holding company which has significant minority or joint
controlling interests in two listed and five unlisted associates on all of whose
boards it is represented. Sabvest`s ordinary and `N` ordinary shares are quoted
in the Financials - Investment Company sector of the JSE Securities Exchange
  South Africa.
  Financial results
Headline earnings increased by 27% to 17,6 cents per share. This result was
primarily due to a stronger overall performance from Sabvest`s Industrial
portfolio, and Nutritional Foods in particular, and from a reduced interest
charge. The further strengthening of the rand has resulted in currency
translation losses which are reflected in the statement of changes in equity.
Sabvest`s balance sheet remains soundly structured and the cash component of
  attributable income continues to increase.
  Changes in investment holdings
In the first half of the year, Sabvest has made no changes to its investment
holdings as recorded in the 2003 annual report. However, various new
  opportunities are presently under consideration.
Certain of its associates concluded transactions as follows:
  - SA Bias is finalising agreements which will result in its interest in
International Trimmings and Labels plc increasing from 88% to 97% over the next
  three years.
  - Nutritional Foods has disposed of its Clifton brands.
  - Flowmax UK has acquired 100% of Torbar Flowmeters Limited and Coulton
Instruments Limited to form its fourth division - Flowmax Instruments. It has
also increased its interest in Center Tank Services Limited to 55%.
  - Midsouth has established Jazzmetrix (Pty) Limited as the vehicle for the
futher development of its facial recognition imaging technology operations.
  Dividend policy
Dividend payments are considered annually and may vary or be waived depending on
the group`s cash requirements. The extent of dividends will be influenced by
operating cash flows and receipts from the non-core components of long-term
investments that are not earmarked for new projects.
  Accounting policies
The results for the interim period have been prepared in accordance with South
African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. The accounting
policies used are consistent with those in the previous financial year and in
  the previous interim reporting period.
  Legal actions
There has been no change in the status of assessment of the legal actions
referred to in the 2003 annual report.
  Prospects
Sabvest expects a slight improvement in headline earnings per share for the year
but not to the extent achieved for the fist six months.
