RESULTS
The group achieved a satisfactory performance in the year to 30 June following
the net profit increase of 58% in the previous year. Room occupancies were
maintained at 76%, despite the fact that the year did not include the
significant one-off events of last year such as the World Summit on Sustainable
Development or the Cricket World Cup.
Continued strong demand for the group`s products led to a 15% increase in
revenue. The number of rooms sold increased by 4% as a result of a seven-month
contribution from City Lodge Umhlanga Ridge and a full year contribution from
both Road Lodge Cape Town International Airport and the additional rooms at City
Lodge V&A Waterfront.
The operating profit increased by 16%. The net interest charge of R0,6 million
was R1,4 million lower than in the previous year. As a result of lower
occupancies, the Courtyard Joint Venture earnings were R0,5 million below the
previous year`s R3,5 million.
The effective tax rate of 34,3%, compared to 33,6% last year, was due to an
increase in Secondary Tax on Companies of 44%.
The group achieved a significant milestone with its net profit exceeding R100
million. This translated into an increase in fully diluted headline earnings per
share of 15% to 238 cents.
Cash generated by operations grew by 21% to R180 million of which R76 million
was used to fund capital expenditure.
OUTLOOK
The current year will benefit from full contributions from City Lodge Umhlanga
Ridge and from Road Lodge Rustenburg which was opened in the last week of the
year under review.
There are a number of sites which the group is investigating to expand its
portfolio of hotels in South and Southern Africa.
With trading conditions anticipated to remain favourable in the year ahead, the
group expects to continue its growth in earnings.
DIVIDEND POLICY
In light of the consistently strong cash generation of the group and the low
level of gearing the board has reviewed the dividend policy.
The board has resolved to increase the dividend payout ratio to 70% of earnings
per reporting period. This increase will not impact on the group`s ability to
continue expanding its operations.
The board has consequently declared a final dividend of 125 cents per share
taking the total distribution for the year to 168 cents, an increase of 38%.
ACCOUNTING POLICIES
These preliminary financial statements have been prepared in accordance with
South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. The
accounting policies used are consistent with those used in the annual financial
statements for the year ended 30 June 2003.
AUDIT REVIEW
These preliminary financial statements have been reviewed by the company`s
