  Johannesburg, Friday 27 August 2004 - Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited       
  (NYSE: HMY JSE: HAR) announced yesterday that members of the National Union of  
  Mineworkers (NUM) had embarked on a protected strike at the company`s Joel Mine.
  Following continued talks throughout Thursday, Harmony is pleased to announce   
  that the employees agreed to return to their place of work commencing with the  
  nightshift in the evening of Thursday 26 August.
