TRADING UPDATE
Shareholders are advised that Mercantile`s loss for the six months ended 30 June
2004 will be materially lower (`materially` being an improvement of between 10%
and 30% as defined in the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa Listings
Requirements) than those reported for the six months ended 30 June 2003 (as
adjusted for the effects of AC133). The results have not been reviewed or
reported on by the company`s auditors. Mercantile`s results for the six months
ended 30 June 2004 are expected to be released on or about 7 September 2004.
