It is with deep regret that the management of Northam advises that rescue teams
have recovered the bodies of a further eight employees who died following a fire
which broke out underground this morning. This brings the total death toll in
this tragic accident to nine.
Management is currently establishing contact with the families and next of kin
of the deceased.
Representatives of the Union and the Department of Minerals and Energy are
currently on site. The mine is committed to working with all parties in
understanding the cause of the accident.
All production has been stopped at the mine until further notice.
