COMMENTS ON RESULTS
1. The favourable trading conditions which prevailed during the latter part of
last year continued during the period under review. Prime overdraft rate reduced
to 11%, its lowest level in more than twenty years, and the currency exchange
rates held firm at strong levels. These external factors placed a brake on new
vehicle price increases and facilitated higher volume sales. A consequence of
the slowdown in new vehicle price increases has been the sharper decline in the
values of used vehicles.
Management has had to be particularly vigilant in the appraisal of trade-ins and
in ensuring a quicker turnover of used vehicle stock. However, despite these
efforts, reduced income was earned in the used car departments. The Group`s
parts and service divisions benefited from the buoyant conditions and both
produced good returns during the period.
2. The car hire division, National/Alamo Car Hire, has now reached the critical
mass level whereby the majority of its branches report a net profit even in the
off-peak winter season. The benefit of reduced holding costs, as a result of the
lower interest rate, was offset to an extent by the higher level of depreciation
necessitated by the sharper decline in used vehicle values. However, the
majority of the hire fleet is protected by manufacturer repurchase agreements.
Higher volumes and an improved daily rate have enabled this division to record a
substantial improvement over the comparative period.
3. Both the financial and corporate ser vices segments continued to show
pleasing growth, albeit off a low base. The Group`s two joint venture finance
arrangements proved highly successful, and the insurance businesses recorded
record returns. Cash flow was tightly controlled during the period under review.
Despite the utilisation of R35 million of cash resources to effect early
repayment of interest- bearing car hire creditors, and the payment of a dividend
of R16,8 million, the Group ended the period with cash resources of R168
million.
4. Whilst the directors are well satisfied with the results which have been
achieved, it must be borne in mind that the current returns are being compared
with the former half of 2003, a period during which particularly difficult
trading conditions prevailed. Economic factors improved considerably during the
second half of last year and the directors caution that it will take a
considerable effort for the Group to maintain the same rate of growth for the
full year. With effect from 1 September 2004 the Group acquired Umhlanga Auto, a
BMW dealer in motor vehicles and motor cycles and a BMW-approved vehicle repair
centre, for the sum of R29,3 million. This dealership is the Group`s second BMW
outlet and is expected to make a meaningful profit contribution.
5. An interim dividend (dividend number 35) of 23,0 cents per share will be paid
on Monday, 13 December 2004 to members reflected in the share register of the
Company at the close of business on the record date Friday, 10 December 2004.
Last day to trade `cum` dividend is Friday, 3 December 2004. First day to trade
`ex` dividend is Monday, 6 December 2004. Share certificates may not be
dematerialised or rematerialised from Monday, 6 December 2004 to Friday, 10
December 2004, both days inclusive.
6. The interim report has been compiled in accordance with South African
Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices, and the accounting
policies are consistent with those used in previous years. The Group is
committed to maintaining the high standards of governance as embodied in the
King Report on Corporate Governance and complies with the significant principles
of both the Report and the JSE Securities Exchange listing requirements. The
report has not been audited or reviewed by the Company`s auditors.
