Telkom does about-turn on forced retrenchments
February 1, 2005

Telkom wanted to scrap plans to force more than 4 000 staff out of jobs and was instead negotiating more expensive voluntary redundancy, it said yesterday.

`We are negotiating with unions a process whereby we could avoid forced retrenchments and replace them with voluntary retrenchments,` said Telkom spokesperson Lulu Letlape.

She said Telkom still aimed to cut its workforce by 4 181 over the next three years as previously announced.

Trade union Solidarity said Telkom`s proposal to it and fellow unions yesterday represented a `welcome change of heart`, but tough talks still lay ahead.

`We still have a problem with some of the conditions put forward by Telkom in its proposed moratorium,` said Solidarity spokesperson Dirk Hermann.

Telkom shares gained R1.55 to close at R108.50 on the JSE Securities Exchange yesterday.
