UNAUDITED INTERIM RESULTS FOR THE SIX MONTH PERIOD ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2004
COMMENTS
Operations
All divisions performed at high levels of efficiency enabling Amap to provide
its extensive dealer network and the public with goods and services representing
exceptional value for money. The flow of new and innovative products from our
leading international suppliers in electronic and household appliances, combined
with outstanding local manufacturing facilities, ensured continuation of the
Group`s dominant presence in the market. The strength of the rand relative to
the dollar, however, rendered us uncompetitive in export markets.
Group performance
As a result of our change in year-end, the 6 month period ended 31 December 2004
is compared with the 6 month period ended February 2004. What follows is a like-
for-like comparison for the 6 months ended December 2003 and December 2004 which
reflects that revenues rose by 24% from R869,3 million to R1 076,0 million
despite deflation estimated at over 15%. Profit attributable to ordinary
shareholders grew by 44% from R50,9 million to R73,3 million whilst headline
earnings per share of 35,8 cents was achieved (25,2 cents - December 2003). Cash
on hand rose from R8,2 million at end December 2003 to R102,0 million at end
December 2004.

Board
No changes have taken place in the composition of the Board, which comprises
seven non-executive directors and four executive directors.
Social responsibility and labour relations
Labour and trade union relations are excellent with insignificant labour
turnover. Special attention continues to be given to equity and skills
regulations, coupled with an ongoing commitment to improved education and the
upliftment of the quality of life of poor people, as well as the development of
our own employee potential.
Corporate governance
Operations at all levels subscribe to the spirit of good corporate governance as
set out in the King report and Amap accepts the need to conduct the enterprise
with integrity, transparency and equal opportunity.
Segmental reporting
The Group predominantly markets and distributes household electrical durables
(HED) and therefore the directors consider the disclosure of segmental
information in terms of AC115 not to be meaningful.
Dividends
The directors have resolved to continue the policy of a single annual dividend
declared at the end of each financial year. Accordingly, a dividend will be paid
for the 12 month period ended 30 June 2005.
Outlook
Projecting the fourth quarter of 2004, the Stellenbosch Bureau for Economic
Research indicated that the majority of consumers, with a bias to the higher
income groups, were optimistic and considered it an appropriate time to buy
durable goods. This was reflected in strong demand for home entertainment and
household electrical products in the last quarter of 2004, although significant
price deflation capped turnover growth.
Whilst retail sales are expected to ease from the very high levels experienced
in the last quarter of 2004, low inflation and interest rates coupled with high
consumer confidence and the growth in the spending power of the emerging black
middle class, should continue to underpin demand. Accordingly, provided a stable
currency environment prevails, improved operating results should be achieved in
the next reporting period even off this high base.
