IN A move intended to quell rising concern about Sasol’s safety record after a spate of accidents, the company said yesterday that it had stepped up safety measures and aimed to achieve world-class safety standards by June next year.

Fourteen people have been killed and more than 375 injured in six accidents at various Sasol operations since last June.

CE Pieter Cox defended the group, which had come under fire from government and labour, saying the recent spate of accidents had to be seen in the context of Sasol’s “exemplary record” of safety in the past.

Cox said Sasol now aimed to reduce its incident rate to the world-class standard of 0,5 incidents per 200000 working hours by June next year, down from one last year.

He would not be drawn on the cause of the accidents.

Sasol had completed its internal probe into the accidents, but Cox said that the results could not be released yet as they formed part of continuing investigations led by the labour and minerals and energy departments.

Labour union Solidarity has said there was a link between the accidents and contractors undertaking work on site around the time of the accidents.

In a statement yesterday, Solidarity called on Sasol to minimise the use of contractors. It said the sooner the chemicals industry admitted there was a problem concerning explosions and contractors, the sooner solutions could be found.
