MINING magnate Brett Kebble said last night he had received informal approaches from managers at DRDGOLD, asking him to take over the its loss-reporting South African assets.
However, Kebble said he would pay just a nominal fee for the mines -which would make DRDGOLD bosses less inclined to do a deal.
`The South African operations are losing between R20m and R25m a month, and I am concerned about the communities who would be affected by mine closures,` he said.
He said DRDGOLD had recently warned that it might shut down some unprofitable shafts.
`I have been asked whether, if the assets were on offer, I would be prepared to take them on.
And we would be prepared to do so,` said Kebble.
`We offered to buy their Klerksdorp assets two years ago, which was not accepted, and since then these have cost them R200m,` he said.
Kebble said if a deal could be struck, the DRDGOLD SA assets would be housed in Simmer & Jack, a subsidiary of JCI.
DRDGOLD spokesman Ilja Graulich said if Kebble were to make an offer, there would be a fiduciary obligation to look at it.
`He must send us something,` he said.
