6 May 2005
GORDON MILLER TO FOCUS ON SIMMER & JACK MINES
Gordon Miller has resigned from the boards of Western Areas Limited and Randgold
& Exploration Company Limited (RG&E) in order to focus on his role in gold miner
Simmer & Jack Mines, Limited (Simmers).
Miller, who heads up Simmers, said that he had taken the step in order to focus
on the main task at hand: `I am devoting all my energy to ensuring that Simmers
achieves its goal of becoming one of South Africa`s leading producers over the
next few years.`
Speaking of his plans for Simmers, Miller said they were examining a number of
projects, including the bid for DRDGold`s former North West assets.
`Our aim is to propel Simmers from a small, 10 000 ounce a year producer to a
400 000 ounce producer in the next three to five years. Additionally, we are in
the process of finalizing a rights issue which will see Simmers become the first
black-controlled producing gold mining company listed on the JSE,` he added.
`Our vision is to achieve long-term sustainability for our assets, and a
critical component of that is our pact with State, Labour and Capital.`
Brett Kebble, chief executive of both Western Areas Limited and RG&E said that
Miller had made a huge contribution to setting the stage for the turn around at
Western Areas: `Gordon has played a key role in putting the Joint Venture back
on track at South Deep and I know we will be able to call upon his vast
experience in the future.`
Kebble added that Western Areas would be appointing another independent director
and that there would also be future independent appointments at RG&E.
Born on 12 September 1961, Miller has had 24 years` experience in the gold
mining industry having occupied senior executive management positions both
locally and abroad. He is a registered professional mining engineer and is a
member of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Since 1994
Miller has gained valuable executive experience whilst performing operational
leadership roles in South Africa, Canada and Western Australia.
