CADIZ APPOINTS NEW CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER
Cape Town - Cadiz Specialised Asset Management (CSAM), the fund management
business of listed financial services group Cadiz Holdings, has appointed
Francois van Wyk as chief investment officer.
He replaces Kobus Louw who left CSAM in December 2004.
Van Wyk joins CSAM from Sanlam Investment Management where he has spent the last
five years, and held a number of positions including head of equities and head
of alternative investments.
Frank Cadiz, managing director of CSAM, said `Francois is a highly rated and
experienced investment professional. He has been the head of equities for the
country`s second largest asset manager, managed one of the most successful
alternative investment units, has a strong research and portfolio management
background and has experience in managing retirement funds, life portfolios and
specialist unit trust funds,` said Cadiz.
`CSAM is a key growth area for Cadiz Holdings and this appointment reflects the
investment that is being made in key personnel. Francois is expected to make a
significant difference to CSAM in a number of areas, including improving our
alpha generating ability, strengthening the initiatives in absolute return fund
management and, most importantly, in the leadership of the investment team.`
After starting his career as an agricultural economist, Van Wyk was a portfolio
manager at Standard Trust, Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank and Nedcor
Investment Bank, before joining Sanlam Investment Management in 1999. He was
promoted to head of equities in November 2001 and assumed responsibility for the
alternative investments unit the following year. In August 2003 he was appointed
senior portfolio manager of Sanlam Private Investments.
During his career at Sanlam, Van Wyk led the portfolio management team in
turning around the equity performance in 2002 after a few years of poor
performance. He received a Raging Bull Award for the top performing industrial
unit trust and was responsible for the establishment of the alternative
investment unit in 2002.
CSAM focuses on alternative and absolute fund management and currently has
assets under management of approximately R14 billion, spread across three areas
of specialisation, namely protected investments, active investments and most
recently hedge funds. In the year to December 2004, CSAM increased its revenue
by 40% to R48,4 million.
