Driefontein celebrates production of 100-million ounces of gold
Johannesburg, 30 August 2005: Gold Fields Limited (GFI: JSE, NYSE) is proud to
announce that its Driefontein Gold Mine today celebrated a major milestone with
a gold pour to mark its production of 100-million ounces of gold.
Mr Ian Cockerill, chief executive officer of Gold Fields, said this was an
achievement that no other single mine in the world had come close to emulating.
He said that Driefontein was today producing 1.2-million ounces of gold a year
and was likely to produce a further 25-million ounces over the next 20 years.
Driefontein commenced production in 1952.
Among the dignitaries present were the South African Minister of Minerals and
Energy, Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, the Deputy Director General of the Department of
Minerals and Energy, Mr Jacinto Rocha, the mayor of Merafong, Mr Desmond van
Rooyen, as well as other representatives of the Department of Minerals and
Energy, the Inspectorate of Mines and the investment community.
Mr Cockerill added:
`Driefontein is arguably the greatest gold mine in the world - producing 100-
million ounces is a major achievement in anyone`s language. Now, the challenge
for the people of Driefontein is to build on this milestone and move forward to
safely, efficiently and cost-effectively extract the next 25-million ounces of
gold.`
`As much as Driefontein has, over the past 53 years, played a key role in the
development of the Merafong community and South Africa as a whole, we must rise
to the challenge of playing our role in the future development of the new South
Africa. If we do this, we can all be justifiably proud of the role that mining
has and will continue to play in this country.`
Driefontein is located just outside the city of Merafong on South Africa`s
famous West Wits line, about 70 kilometres to the west of Johannesburg.
