CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN MEDI-CLINIC CORPORATION AND UNITED EASTERN
MEDICAL SERVICES HERALDS NEW ERA OF INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION IN PRIVATE
HEALTHCARE
Southern African private healthcare group, Medi-Clinic Corporation and United
Eastern Medical Services of Abu Dhabi signed a co-operation agreement on
Saturday, 24 September 2005. The agreement stipulates the intention of the two
parties to jointly undertake significant private hospital developments. It is
foreseen that after completion of all the necessary studies within a couple of
months, at least one new private hospital in Abu Dhabi will be developed and
that this will be followed by further possible private healthcare co-operation
in the United Arab Emirates between the two groups.
The envisaged first hospital to be developed will be a specialised woman and
child hospital providing around 200 to 250 beds. It will be located on a prime
site in Abu Dhabi and will be named `Mother of Emirates Hospital`. Feasibility
studies will also continue regarding some primary care clinics and further
opportunities in other United Arab Emirates countries and neighbouring states.
The co-operation agreement was signed in Abu Dhabi by Dr Edwin de la H Hertzog,
chairman of Medi-Clinic Corporation, and Mr Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa, managing
director of United Eastern Medical Services. The South African Minister of Trade
and Industry, Mr Mandisi Mpahlwa, is currently leading a trade mission to the
United Arab Emirates and attended the signing of the agreement.
Both healthcare groups have expressed the desire to be part of the strategic
development of the General Health Authority of Abu Dhabi in its endeavours to
upgrade and develop the quality of the country`s healthcare facilities to
international standards.
The chairman of the United Eastern Group, parent company of United Eastern
Medical Services, His Excellency Ali M. Al Shorafa Al Hammadi, commented:
`United Eastern Medical Services on this occasion would like to convey its
sincere gratitude and profound appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin
Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive
Council, for his continuous support and astute guidance to allow us to translate
his vision of introducing superior healthcare services for the society of the
Emirate of Abu Dhabi. We hope that we will fulfil the trust and vision of the
Crown Prince by the Grace of Almighty God. This agreement also marks the
beginning of co-operation between the private healthcare sectors in the UAE and
South Africa`.
Dr. Hertzog added: `We are excited to be part of the private healthcare
developments within Abu Dhabi and the Emirates and believe that our expertise
will add value to healthcare development in the UAE. This agreement is
significant not only for our two companies but also for healthcare co-operation
between South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, a development which will
enhance international ties while bringing learning and value to both countries.
Following the success of the Medi-Clinic operations in Namibia, this expansion
of our horizons could lead to significant South African private hospital
investment in the Middle East region.`
