BOARD MOVES TO "ENHANCE AMAP"S GROWTH POTENTIAL"
Amalgamated Appliance Holdings (Amap), South Africa"s leading importer,
manufacturer and distributor of household electrical and electronic durables,
has announced two far-reaching executive director appointments.
Executive chairman Jack Cohen says that Rob Marais, one of the country"s
foremost appliance executives, has been appointed as CEO of Amap"s small
appliance division.
Marais has more than 16 years of marketing, sales and senior management
experience. He has worked for key blue-chip organizations that include Nestle,
Smith & Nephew, Gillette and, most recently, Whirlpool Appliance Corporation,
the world"s largest major appliance group, where he served as managing director
of the South African operation for the past eight years.
On February 1, Marais will be stepping into the shoes of Spiros Scafidas, who
will move to Australia, where he will be involved in Amap"s small appliance
division"s sourcing and purchasing functions, as well as new product development
in the East.
In addition, Scafidas will explore trading possibilities in the Pacific Rim with
a view to extending Amap"s operations to that area.
He remains an executive director of the holding company and will return
regularly to South Africa to fulfil his ongoing responsibilities in Amap"s
management and development.
Cohen believes that Scafidas"s new responsibilities, along with Marais"s new
appointment, have enhanced Amap"s long term growth potential.
"We step into the future piloted by four dynamic young divisional CEOs. In
addition to Marais and Scafidas, both in their early 40s, Alan Nossel, a 46 year
old CA(SA), is CEO of our electronic division, while Sheldon Cohen, a 45 year-
old Harvard MBA, is CEO of Amap"s corporate services."
