Cipla Medpro announces Triomune as long-awaited breakthrough for HIV/AIDS
treatment
The first ever 3-in-1 combination of a first-line recommended anti-HIV/AIDS
treatment regimen has successfully been registered in South Africa. Jerome
Smith, CEO of Cipla Medpro, said that the registration of TRIOMUNE comes as a
long-awaited medical breakthrough which will simplify the treatment of HIV/AIDS,
resulting in improved patient adherence and ultimately saving more lives and
improving the quality of life of those living with HIV/AIDS.
TRIOMUNE will also enable the lowering of total costs, including production,
storage, transport, dispensing and other healthcare costs, which will help in
scaling up access to anti-HIV/AIDS treatment programmes in the country.
Cipla Medpro is a subsidiary of JSE-listed Enaleni Pharmaceuticals, which was
recently awarded the Financial Mail Top BEE Company in the Health Sector and
accordingly, is well positioned as the preferred empowerment partner of choice
in respect of the imminent Healthcare Charter.
In the developed world, HIV/AIDS is considered a manageable condition and no
longer a death sentence. In South Africa, the condition still causes the death
of 750 people every day. 9% of the South African population live with HIV/AIDS
and the numbers increase by 1700 every day. Only 60 000 patients are treated in
the private sector whilst approximately 100 000 patients receive treatment in
the public sector.
TRIOMUNE contains three different anti-HIV/AIDS medicines in one tablet,
reducing the daily pill burden from six or more tablets per day to only one pill
in the morning and one at night. A reduction in pill burden correlates with
increased treatment adherence which in turn is directly related to the survival
of people living with HIV/AIDS.
The three anti-HIV/AIDS medicines in TRIOMUNE, i.e. lamivudine (under license
from Glaxo Group Ltd. and the Wellcome Foundation Ltd.); nevirapine (under
license from the Boehringer Ingelheim group of companies) and stavudine,
currently form part of the first-line recommended treatment regimen of the South
African Department of Health, the South African HIV Clinicians Society, WHO,
Europe and many other countries around the world.
The efficacy and safety of TRIOMUNE is supported by extensive clinical data
documented in numerous medical publications. Data from ongoing treatment
programmes in South Africa have shown this two-pill-a-day regimen to prolong the
lives of people with HIV/AIDS. Patients on TRIOMUNE have been shown to gain
weight, have less opportunistic infections, have increased immunity and
decreased viral numbers.
TRIOMUNE is indeed a breakthrough and represents Cipla Medpro s commitment to
making life-saving medicines accessible and affordable to the broader
population. Cipla Medpro s dream of sustainable healthcare for all is realized
in some small way by the registration and launch of TRIOMUNE.
Trevor Edwards, CEO of Enaleni Pharmaceuticals, said, It is anticipated that
the sales of TRIOMUNE are expected to have a positive impact on the financial
performance of the Group. Enaleni is positioning itself to be a major player in
the ARV market and, through its wholly owned subsidiary Cipla Medpro, already
has eleven registrations with a further seven having been submitted to the MCC.
