TRADING STATEMENT
This trading statement is issued in compliance with the Listings Requirements
(section 3.4(b)) of the JSE Limited.
Mercantile"s earnings and headline earnings per share for the year ending 31
December 2006 are expected to improve by 40% to 45% compared to the earnings
and headline earnings per share reported for the year ended 31 December 2005.
This improvement in earnings is largely attributable to the ongoing growth in
core business and cost containment. The earnings have also benefited by non-
recurring income, as well as exceptional recoveries on amounts previously
written off, but at lower levels than the recoveries made in 2005.
The financial information on which this trading statement is based has not
been reviewed or reported on by the company"s auditors.
The results for the year ending 31 December 2006 are expected to be published
towards the end of February 2007.
