LONRHO`S FLY540 LAUNCHES NEW AIR SERVICES TO KISUMU
Lonrho is pleased to announce that Fly540, a recently established low cost
airline in Kenya in which Lonrho has a 49% stake, has launched its second route
from Nairobi`s main international airport to Kisumu in Western Kenya last
Friday. This development complements Fly540`s inaugural service from Nairobi to
Mombasa which commenced in late November 2006 and has seen strong demand.
Fly540 was established to meet the growing demand for alternative domestic and
regional air travel, as well as to provide freight services, within Africa. It
is the first "no frills carrier" within the East African region. From its base
in Kenya, a popular tourist destination, Fly540 is in an ideal position to take
advantage of the country`s thriving domestic air travel market. Furthermore,
Fly540 intends to launch its first international services into the East African
region in the course of 2007 with the aim of transforming the group into a
transcontinental carrier.
Commenting on the launch of this second route, Don Smith, CEO of Fly540, said:
"After Mombasa, Kisumu is East Africa`s busiest destination and an integral part
in our network. The success of our flights to Mombasa has exceeded our
expectations and we are delighted to have been able to introduce the Kisumu
route so quickly. We currently intend to introduce another two routes in the
course of the next three months."
