ELAND PLATINUM STARTS OPEN PIT MINING
Open pit mining has begun at Eland Platinum Holdings Limited`s` Elandsfontein
Platinum Mine near Brits in South Africa`s North West Province, the company said
today - just 17 months since the company was established, less than 10 months
since its JSE Limited listing and less than nine months since its application
for a mining right.
In the first production blast yesterday afternoon, 96 tonnes of explosives were
used to break some 300 000 tonnes (t) of rock in the new mine`s western UG2
boxcut.
Members of the Eland Platinum board were joined at yesterday`s first blast by
the Department of Minerals and Energy`s Deputy Director-General, Mr Jacinto
Rocha. MD David Salter paid tribute to the DME for "outstanding guidance and
commitment" that resulted in Eland Platinum being granted its mining right just
nine months after application.
